In case you were wondering how the season premiere of Awake did, the numbers weren't incredible, but I think I know why. In the series premiere of Awake, the overall TV ratings were a 4.6/8. It tied NBC's record for this particular time period.
4.6/8 means that 4.6% of all estimated households tuned in and that 8% of all the people in those houses were watching.
Or, 6.3M viewers.
I know that doesn't seem like much for a show that seems huge, but there are several factors that could be contributing to this, and the primary one is that Awake has been available for preview for quite some time, over on NBC.com and on my On Demand system.
My other concern is that you really have to pay attention or you'll lose who you're following in the show. I'm not sure our Nielsen families are going to appreciate being made to work at watching a TV show.
One of my favorite examples of this was My Own Worst Enemy with Christian Slater. It was about a spy agency whose assets had brain chips that turn them on and off for assignments. It was a fun show, but confusing because there were too many agents and too many nuances to keep track of.
As I said over on my ratings source article in the comments,

"I'm hoping AWAKE does well, but the Nielsen family member just wants to come home, plop down on the couch and be persuaded by TV ads."
