The other day on the nationally-syndicated talk show, KATIE, (check local listings, katiecouric.com) Katie Couric continued to follow the effects of Hurricane Sandy by visiting some of the most devastated areas along the East Coast. Couric surveyed the damage and spoke to victims of the storm, even pitching in at locations in The Rockaways and Staten Island this past weekend. On today's show, viewers took in some amazing and powerful stories of rescue and recovery taking place in the wake of this unforgettable storm. 

The episode also included in-studio visits with rocker Jon Bon Jovi and actor Steve Buscemi of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," who joined Couric to talk about the devastation they've seen first-hand and how viewers can help. In addition, Buscemi gave Couric a tour of Breezy Point (Queens), where over 100 homes were burned to the ground due to a fire which started in the midst of Hurricane Sandy. In addition, the "Katie" team partnered with HiTouch Business Services and Lowe's who provided trucks with well over $50,000 worth of  clean up supplies that are to be distributed to Union Beach, NJ and Belle Harbor, Rockaway.   Discover Home Loans also gave "Katie" $50,000. $25,000 will go to Friends of Firefighters (Steve Buscemi's charity) and $25,000 will go to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation for rebuilding efforts in Staten Island. Viewers can help by going to KatieCouric.com/donate  to find a number of organizations they can help.

JBJ: Our restaurant –it's 30 seats. Yesterday, we served and shipped out 500 dinners and 300 lunches. And every one of those meals was needed and gone.  My wife's down there today, and the only reason I'm here is to get this word out, but I'm heading down there now.

 

Jon Bon Jovi on his reaction to seeing his hometown of Sayreville, NJ for the first time after the hurricane

KC: You took a tour of your hometown of Sayreville, New Jersey, when you got home.

JBJ: Yeah.

KC: You described it as Armageddon. What was it like?

JBJ: I was shocked. I was in London, and like many other people, I didn't listen to the warnings and I told my family "This will pass." Irene last year we were dancing on the beach. We didn't take it very seriously. I went off to London, and my family were in a hotel and moved to the Upper East Side, power out everywhere – I had to get home. When I got home, and until you're home, you don't realize the enormity of the disaster. And so right off the plane, I went right to my hometown to witness the devastation. The flood plane was so high that people ultimately – they have to raise these houses . There's no bringing them back; they're just done.
