For almost the entire marketing campaign for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim has been focused on giant robots and Kaiju. Very little has touched on the human factor underneath the story. It's been hinted at, but not focused on.
No love stories, no conflicts... just that all of humanity is threatened by extinction.
Despite the obvious fun for certain genre fans, there's an entire demographic of movie-goers that are being left out in the marketing. And if there's nothing in the marketing, is there any underlying human factor in the story?
Don't get me wrong. Giant robots and giant monsters sometimes don't really need much story to be fun. Case in point, the dozens upon dozens of Godzilla movies that have been made through the years.
But for a movie to sell tickets, a much larger demographic has to be appealed to. I haven't seen that in the marketing. Director del Toro chimed in to the media about the poor tracking, saying that the marketing will kick in and he was fine with what he's seeing out there.
I hope he knows something we don't!
YouTube as a metric?
What I do know is that looking around on YouTube, 1 Grown Ups 2 vid has almost 8 million views, the next most viewed GU2 has 4M views. Rim trailers and clips have around 6 million views. Ug.-
With that said, let's pump up the action around Screen Static a little bit!

"When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse."
In case you missed it, the movie opens on July 12th, directed and written by Guillermo del Toro, and the cast includes Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Ron Perlman, Robert Maillet, Robert Kazinsky and Clifton Collins Jr..
