You have to love viral campaigns. The "engage the consumer" tactic that kicks in gear long before the movie comes along is a decent use of free publicity and the web. And as campaigns develop, they create the much coveted word-of-mouth.
And that kind of FREE exposure is a good thing. Especially when it comes to the new, upcoming film, Godzilla.
Right now, the production is filming in Hawaii of all places. (Must be nice!) More specifically, they were last spotted filming on Waikiki beach, where they made the beach in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village look like a disaster zone, complete with the apparent ruins of a hotel, broken aircraft and water vessels (Pronounced wessels in Star Trek, if you're a Chekov fan!).
Amongst the debris, victims, or more specifically, around 225 extras were screaming for help, as 30 Hawaii National Guard, and 17 Hawaii firefighters were playing themselves responding to the fake emergency.
And in amongst the rubble, is Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), carrying 5-year-old actor Jake Cunanan through the mess of it all.
That just sounds fun.
Shooting in Hawaii started on June 30th, and other locations for filming Godzilla include Steveston, Nanaimo, Vancouver, and Victoria, in British Columbia, Canada.

But wait, I mentioned viral, didn't I?
Well, sure enough, over at GodzillaEncounter.com, they've started posting pictures of fictional website news articles that highlight what look like encounters with the big lizard himself.
One news article says that Japaneses fishing vesel went missing after reporting that it encountered a black iceberg that, as the last transmission said, "saw us."
-
Another article that was "pictured" on the site shows an article where one man's deep sea seismograph was picking up tectonic activity that promises big waves. A high surf advisory was put into effect, but in one odd closing statement, the man makes note that even though he's not a "storm expert," he could swear that the seismic epicenter is moving.
PLEASE NOTE the estimated waves destination of San Diego, as in possibly, during the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con!

Oh yea... the fun has just begun!
Stay tuned... I'm staying on top of all Godzilla viral and production news as it happens
