We finally got to experience one of the most anticipated TV series in a long time... a new Joss Whedon product called Agents of SHIELD on ABC, a spinoff of sorts, from The Avengers movie and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
(This is more of a spoiler-free review of the concept of the series...)
Joss's work is back on TV. How's that feelin' FOX? (Sorry. Couldn't help that one.)
Well, the show is created and helmed by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen.
But this show isn't a surprise. This is going to be us following Agent Coulson and SHIELD, after the events of The Avengers, because the world is in shock that aliens and meta humans exist.
-
The series premiere of Agents of SHIELD introduced us to our primary characters of the series, including Agent Coulson, who is pulling this team together.
That team including Agents Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) [at least in this episode], Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) and computer techs Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Jenna Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). Or as these two keep getting called, ‘Fitzsimmons.’
They're joined by Skye (Chloe Bennet), an activist blogger who does have some skills to contribute to this team. And oh, what a team of mixed skills.
-
For fans of The Avengers and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this isn't that world, so to speak. This is the humans behind the scenes of all the movies we've seen. They're the ones that keep track of everything that goes on. These are regular folks who stand up to the meta-humans.
The first episode developed and pulled together the team as they tackled their first issue or meta-human issue.
The episode had more light, quip humor than I expected. Almost too much as far as I was concerned. It didn't ruin the show, it just surprised me.
And the curious bit that I enjoyed seeing, was addressing the mystery behind Agent Coulson's resurrection.
I think Agents of SHIELD got off to a pretty good start and I expect the usual Whedon team ensemble developments to start showing, as we learn about each player from episode to episode.
For now, Coulson is the glue that will hold the show together until we come to get to know and like the other characters.
I'm in for now.

SPOILERS?
Coulson says he was skewered but survived, getting rehab in that "magical place" called Tahiti.
But there's chatter in the background from Agent Hill, suggesting that what Coulson "knows" and what happened are two different things and that Coulson should never find out what really happened.
Ah, the promised, season-long mystery about Coulson that Whedon promised a while back!
Very early on it's been established that in The Avengers, Coulson stopped breathing for 8 seconds after Loki skewered him. He says he was staring at a bright light then pulled through.
He says that Fury sent him to Tahiti to recover, sipping Mai Tais and enjoy the company of a physical therapist with an irrelevant lack of English-speaking ability.
He tells Maria Hill, "You should go some time. Tahiti. It's a magical place."
When he walks away Dr. Streiten (Ron Glass) quietly says, "Tahiti. He really doesn't know, does he?" Hill replies that "He can never know."
I'm still going with the LMD theory. But now I'm wondering who is/was the LMD?
Sure, it seems obvious, but not everyone is a franchise fan from yesteryear, who knew that SHIELD used LMDs. It's a classic tool and Whedon likes some of the aspects from the classic era.
Or is he an alien working with SHIELD? Or is "magical place" a side reference to The Scarlet Witch? Or Doctor Strange?
Most excellent mystery.

In the meantime, let's see where Agents of SHIELD takes us. Let's give the Whedon team time to build that group dynamic.
