'Firefly/Serenity:' Want To See What Happened After the Movie Ended?

Serenity movie from Joss Whedon

For fans of the Joss Whedon created world of the TV series Firefly, we saw how Joss was allowed to end the series with the 2005 cinematic event called Serenity.  In it, Joss was allowed to finish his story.

But for some, how it ended only whetted our appetite for what might have happened after Mal (Nathan Fillion) stopped 'The Operative's' (Chiwetel Ejiofor) dedicated mission and uncovered the dirtiest secret that the Alliance was hiding.

(No, if you were one of the few who have not seen Serenity, I ain't tellin' ya what happens!)

Where did the operative go?  What happened to the crew after events in the movie?

Well, guess what?  Fans will be getting their wish.

Dark Horse Comics (bless their souls!) has wrangled artist Georges Jeanty (Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Season 8 and Season 9 comic) to pen their new Serenity comic series!

No writers have been announced yet.

Serenity comic will begin with "Mal and the crew are recouping from their recent strike against the sinister interplanetary government, The Alliance, in which they exposed government agencies as those responsible for the creation of ***************.   ************* Mal is finding himself and his ship in greater danger than ever."

I blocked out the spoilers on the wee chance you really haven't see the movie yet.  (It's awesome and is easily watchable, over and over and over.)

What's exciting about this is that with other TV series titles that have gone to comics, some of the original writers from the shows have contributed to the comic titles.

To date, as far as I know, there have been several titles/stories, two miniseries, a couple of one-shot titles and a few shorts based on the Firefly series.

One of the miniseries titles was written by Whedon himself, while there were character titles based on Shepherd and Wash.

Critics of TV series based comic titles bitch about how this is a poor substitute for new movies or TV series.  In the meantime, while no studio (FOX, who owns rights to the franchised) will step up to produce anything new for Firefly,  (It would be a collaborative effort between Fox and Whedon, and as we all know, Whedon is a wee bit busy these days being awesome and helming the Marvel Cinematic Universe.) fans always want more.

TV Shows Continued in Comics

Other TV shows have had comic book extensions to their stories... Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Chuck, Supernatural, Alf, Xena: Warrior Princess, Battlestar Galactica, Charmed, Farscape, Jericho, Angel, Dollhouse and The X-Files are titles I can think or know of.

All to various degrees of "success."

But what has been appreciated by fans of the franchises is that the story is not restricted by budgetary restrictions on production.

To be honest, this is the first time I've been pretty jazzed about a comic based off of Firefly.  Sure, they had events from within the series, but this new announcement on a Serenity title will truly address what takes place to continue the story.

That, is what I'm looking forward to in this new comic.

And in case you had not heard, there's also been an online multi-player game on the horizon.
