According to sources, Roland Emmerich said in an interview that there's a new project on the horizon for a Stargate movie trilogy project.
But the confusing part is that he calls it a sequel and a reboot.
Eh? In the process of this being reported, this "sequel/reboot" thing was compared to how J.J. Abrams handled Star Trek... keeping it similar, but using a screw up in the time-continuum in the first movie to explain the changes that were presented in the story.
So familiar, but different. Like how Eureka changed up the core of the story in the last few seasons with a time travel flub, before Comcast cancelled it off of Syfy.
Be it as it may, with Emmerich saying he's been talking with MGM on this project, this is still an unconfirmed project. And MGM hasn't been exactly drooling all over themselves to crank out any additional Stargate products.
When Stargate Atlantis was dumped in favor of the more dark-toned Stargate Universe, the core fans hated the change.
It seems they were trying to capture the same magic that Moore's Battlestar Galactica did with its dark story tone.
But they failed when they took an adventure series that didn't take itself that serious and tried to duplicate the BSG tones. Well, they failed to retain the fan base.
When Stargate Universe faded from the ratings as it got moved from night to night and then cancelled, that was it. The last we saw of Stargate on TV. No more movies, shows, nada.
They've not been motivated due to what I can guess is lack of consumer interest via their focus studies.
So in the end, it's nice to see and hear that folks are still talking about Stargate, but in the reality of it all, well, it has to look like a viable, financial investment and not a risk to MGM.
I'm sure over the next few weeks, we'll here about various players show interest in reprising roles and what not.
And it's always exciting to read those things. But an actor isn't the one who makes the call on if a project goes into production. No matter how hopeful the interviews or sound bytes sound.
I know, I like seeing those tiny hopeful bits too, but in the end, the cast are only the players. It's like you saying what you'd like your employer to do for you, to help a private career dream you might have.
Sorry... I hear folks hate my pragmatic side.
Maybe this time around, there might be more merit to the stories out there about a new movie project. Just maybe.
