Marvel is fine With the 'Iron Man 3' Mandarin Story - Really?

Iron Man 3 SPOILERS abound if you have not seen the movie yet...

As you all know, Disney & Marvel came up with a twist plot involving Iron Man's age-old arch nemesis, The Mandarin, who was played by Ben Kingsley.

Age old comic franchise fans were completely dissed while writers Shane Black and Drew Pearce made The Mandarin into an out-of-work actor who was hired by Killian to distract the world from his own activities.

That twist, has this lifelong Iron Man fan pretty disenchanted.  It's like if they took Lex Luthor or The Joker and made them hollow shells of what fans knew of them.

{I address this over on my parent site, Brusimm.com, what if wb made lex luthor a vagabond}

As the date for the DVD/Blu-ray release fast approaches, Marvel is doing some extra effort to generate interest.

But...

Marvel co-president Louis D'Esposito told IGN in an interview that they expected some backlash from this twist, yet they say that the box office numbers back up their idea of the twist.  In other words, the bet was on the general movie fan loving this twist, and that long-time comic franchise fans were a small enough demographic to warrant the risk, or we'd be willing to digest the movie, regardless.

If I remove myself from the category of rabid fan, I can honestly say this film did deliver a good character story and as a film, in general, was a good movie experience.  {brusimm: iron man 3 review}

I recognized that.

But in a different post I did earlier here on Cinema Static, "Honest Trailers" did a great job calling it as they see it. {accurate honest trailers for Iron Man 3}

It's a bit upsetting, as a fan, to see that Marvel pretty much took this risk and dismissed the core fan base that flocked to the first and second movies.  But I also can't deny that it was, as far as films, marketing and built up expectations go, a brilliant twist.  I just wish it wasn't done with this franchise.

This Mandarin bait and switch was the ONLY surprise left for movie fans of the movie.  Disney/Marvel marketed the living crap out of it.  There were 8 trailers that gave a lot away, and then there were 7 preview clips.  On top of that, there were as many released featurettes.  And Disney played these over and over.

At this point in time, I'm pretty mixed on if I'm going to pick up the third Iron Man movie.  In fact this twist sort took the wind out of my sails for the entire film franchise, knowing we're teased for two movies about the Mandarin (Ten Rings group we saw or heard about in the first two films), for nothing.

So sure, Shane Black put his stamp of creative direction on the film. He created a lemon of an armor (See the Honest Trailers link above), pulled out any AC/DC tunes, put it in the Christmas time frame of year and he dest...  well, I'm getting ahead of myself and you probably don't want to be completely spoiled.

Here's the deal:  Iron Man 3 is a good movie.  If you're a fan of the comic franchise, apply your thick skin, and go check it out.  It's worthy if you're prepared for it.
