'Agents of SHIELD' Episode "The Asset" Review

Below, I start my review with my opinions from Agents of SHIELD, followed by a quick recap of what I saw tonight, then slightly more review thoughts and reflections... (Oh, and SPOILERS for the time-shifted viewer)

ED-OP Agents of SHIELD Review

ED-OP Agents of SHIELD Review - - - - -

As it stands, Agents of SHIELD is coasting on multiple coat tails.

It has the ratings momentum off of one of the most popular movies in the recent era, The Avengers.

Folks are fervent about what used to be the ever-stoic Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg).

Fans have been teased that there will be clues and hints dropped about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that THIS is an action drama about this team of normal folks, facing insurmountable odds.

This third episode, "The Asset," has fair character development, but I'm worried that as we watch more and more episodes, the mystique of Agent Coulson will wear thin, then lose its appeal.  And that's not counting the mystery behind how he survived being skewered by Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in The Avengers.

My other concern is how this "teased about Coulson mystery" plays out.  If the reveal is not done right, the audience will be pissed.  With this mellow momentum that that show has, where fans would love to eat up some superhero action, but settling for the hoped-for dynamics from a Whedon, et al, project, well, there needs to be a fine balance the production team needs to hit.

All the while, keeping this human balance at the forefront.

Again, lots of faith in several aspects.  Aspects that if any of them become flimsy or start to tire the viewing audience, could be the crumbling block of this wall called Agents of SHIELD.

The show has a solid VoD following, even as live ratings drop, VoD viewings are helping set other records.  So for the time being, I'm not worried.

Lola's License Changing Plate

Dang, any scene that Lola was in tonight, we never had a clear angle to see the plate, so I don't know if it changed again or not.

I was pretty curious as to what it was going to be in this episode.

The Rising Tide

Here's an interesting tidbit about the terrorist group in Agents of SHIELD called Rising Tide.  It seems there's a real group, an environmental group with the same name out there who is trying to bring attention to climate change.  Word is they're antsy about the correlation and are asking Disney to stop using their name.

Hey, coincidence is what it is.  And to be honest, I never heard of them until just now.  So that thing about any press is good press, just might be a good thing.  They should parley this coincidence into their good fortune rather than shun it.

But that's just me.  Look at how the Miley Cyrus crap from her awards show keeps circulating.  This could be good for them.

Agents of SHIELD Recap - - - - -
The episode opens as we follow a tractor trailer and two SUV's that turn out to be SHIELD transport vehicles that find themselves being attacked by an unseen force, pulling the trucks up into the air and dropping them.

The cargo they were transporting was a physicist, Dr. Franklin Hall.

-

To find and rescue him, the team ends up sending Skye (Chloe Bennet) into the situation, where the bad guys are holding a social function.  But Skye has us fully on the edge of our seat as she exposes her SHIELD affiliation to their target.

Skye on assignment for SHIELD

But it was all a ruse on the viewer!  She sets off a SHIELD gadget that Fitz/Simmons gave her, and it lets them take control of the computers and SHIELD into the compound.

And the prize for this mission was a doozy.  Not to mention that I have to wonder when, or if, this will come back to haunt them.

-

I'll let you find out for yourself what happens from there.

-

This is the third episode of Marvel's gift to TV while their cinematic universe continues to evolve for the silver screen.

The characters are starting to have deeper dialog, especially between Skye and Agent Ward (Brett Dalton).  At least in this episode.

Coulson even gets in on the action and goes on mission with Ward.

And the excessive quipping has taken a break finally, as the team gets serious and focused.

Thank god.

-

Once again, Coulson references having seen action with The Avengers, and May (Ming-Na Wen) says, "...where you died."

They won't let us settle in without reminding us about this mystery in the background about Coulson.  They further implicate this mystery later in the closing scenes when Coulson's having issues handling a firearm, quoting it should be as simple as muscle memory.  (Hmm... why are they treating fans like morons?  We've been all over this mystery ever since Joss Whedon dropped the hint it could be a season-long riddle.  Each single clue is good enough gang!  Really.)

So is Coulson an LMD? I always presumed an LMD took the hit on the hellicarrier. (A theory of mine over on my other site, before I moved back here.)
