The story is about Klaus (Joseph Morgan), his brother Elijah (Daniel Gillies), their sister Rebekah (Claire Holt) and their return to New Orleans.
If you saw the spinoff episode of The Vampire Diaries, Klaus headed off to New Orleans to discover that his old protege, Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) has not only taken over the town, but has also figured out how to control the witches in the town.
But there are problems. The witches are trying to recruit Klaus to help scatter their vampire problem, and Elijah has stepped up to help Klaus out of the pickle he's found himself in.
The pickle being that he's pissed off Marcel, his one-night stand, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) has become pregnant with a hybrid child, and the witches have captured Hayley, looking to use her as leverage over Klaus.
But Klaus isn't having the normal parental inspirations and isn't being held sway by the witches threats to Kayley.
In comes Elijah to set things on the right path.

In the pilot episode, the story revolved mostly around the debonair Elijah and his efforts to understand the problem and try to fix things, if possible.
I was surprised how off-balanced Klaus was portrayed. He was an angry original vampire. Elijah can attest to that.
Being that the show is a spinoff, I was only watching it half-heartedly. But at the point that I felt the episode should be coming to a close, I found it to be at the half-hour mark.
That's a good thing. In fact this premiere episode was much better than the episode on TVD it spun off from.
I'm actually looking forward to this show. If the pace and writing stay on par with the pilot, The Originals should be very entertaining throughout the season. Not to mention the eye candy factor that should help draw in the female viewer demographic!
