'Agents of SHIELD' Recap of 'The Well' (11-19-13)

(12th different writer in 8 episodes.  Just sayin.)

SPOILERS

Agents of SHIELD

SHIELD starts out with a quick bit a teaser/recap of events from the Thor movies.  Then we follow a pair of folks who are searching for an Asgardian artifact that has been buried in a tree for a very, very long time.

The couple find what they're looking for and go on a rampage of sorts.

In SHIELD's investigation, Ward comes in contact with a second piece of this staff that's causing issues.  It seems to feed the inner angry child.

Through it all, they discover that a professor who they turned to for help, is the Asgardian who hid the various pieces of the staff.

In the end, the infected Ward uses the power granted to him from the staff to help defeat the pair and their friends who were running around destroying things.

Then May stepped up to help Ward.  She took hold of the staff, but the anger didn't overwhelm her.  Something about always facing her anger.

And then there it was, the elephant in the room.  Well, now two of them.

Let's look at Ward and May.

OK, so they shared a bond on the field of battle and they both have anger issues they deal with... in their own ways.

But at the end of the episode, where May leaves her hotel door open for Ward, and he goes in, taking her up on her invitation?  I did not see that coming at all.  And it seems...  forced or rushed.  Where did this come from?  It just does not feel right.

Coulson Conversation with the Asgard Hiding on Earth:

Coulson talking to the Asgardian, talking about being stabbed in the heart gave us a wee bit more info on the insights that Coulson is experiencing with his condition.  That he does not remember being revived, but just waking up months later.

And a bit later, we were treated to a nightmare, or at least what Coulson would call a nightmare.  Getting a massage from a beautiful girl, in Tahiti.

Which startled him awake in a cold sweat.

Once again the elephant in the room was pushed around during the episode and I was getting ready to tune out.  But before I was able to get to the remote, something a bit more substantial started to take place with

Wait?  Are we starting to finally get more actual story about Coulson?

This week, I found FitzSimmons rather distracting and annoying, particularly the Simmons part of the equation.  She bantered on and on about how it's all science, despite being presented with an Asgard magic staff.

And the story this week had a wee bit more substance. Though yet again, the perps who were pulling off the bad deed of the week were handled with kid gloves.  Mere random satellite characters carrying out the deeds needed to conveniently pull off the crime of the week that motivates the subsequent actions needed to make the episode.

Agents of SHIELD needs consistency in a writing staff and needs to settle down and start delivering content rather than what feels like rushed, canned stories to meet deadlines and obligations.

I've pointed out the obvious, in that Joss Whedon only created but does not contribute to the series.  That the Whedon family exec produces, but does not write the scripts.  I have a bad feeling they're only rushing through the season to get it over with and then be done with.

They've already destroyed the mystique of Agent Coulson... the damage is done.

Do you think the show will last past this first season?  At this rate, I hope not.
