The film is directed by Scott Derrickson, whose resume includes Sinister, The Day the Earth Stood Still and is on tap to direct Marvel's Doctor Strange movie.
The plot says
"New York police officer Ralph Sarchie investigates a series of crimes. He joins forces with an unconventional priest, schooled in the rites of exorcism, to combat the possessions that are terrorizing their city."
The film starts out in 2010 watching a few guys on a military maneuver that takes them into a strange place. It's a quick scene and then we jump to the "present" of 2013. Eric Bana is a police detective who finds himself in the middle of a series of odd events. He starts to put the clues together, despite the obscure nature of some of the crimes, and though he does not actually digest the clues for what they are, he starts to put some kind of theory together.
The film is a great time-killer while the ambiance of the picture is portrayed as a dark, gritty place. The movie frights are fairly run-of-the-mill, though on occasion, they are well timed and still get you to jump a bit. Once we get to the possessed puzzle pieces it starts to pick up a bit.
If you're an Eric Bana fan I think this film will not be a fail in your eyes, plus, I am not sure when he did it, but his arms are bulked up huge!
Aside from that, the third act seems to sneak up on you and you don't actually realize you're watching one of the final scenes or confrontations in the film.
IMDb users gave this movie a 6.2. I think that is about right for this film.
