The script is being written by Fred Dekker (Star Trek: Enterprise, Edge, Tales from the Crypt), whose work resume mostly resides in the 80s and 90s, except for the 2015 TV movie, Edge, which netted a 6/10 on IMDb after about 500 votes.
The marketing spin for the script says that it is,
“The writing is so fresh, the perspective is so fresh. I’m telling you you’re going to get something you don’t expect and you’re going to say, ‘This is the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.’”
And to date, it's been referred to as a reboot, then a sequel. We'll see even of that quote seems to lean towards reboot. Like I said... the marketing spin. Right?
I'm a die-hard Predator fan, almost as much as I am an Iron Man fan.
But since IM3 hit theaters and we had this trick plot point from director Shane Black, I was a bit soured on the man. (The Mandarin being an out of work actor.)
Now we have to buckle down and brace ourselves because Shane Black is directing this newest rendition of the Predator film franchise.
I've enjoyed this franchise, even when it crossed over with the Alien(s) franchise, and I also had a great time with this 2010 Predators film.
But if they're doing what they first call an inventive sequel to the 1987 film that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger (and Shane Black himself, who played Hawkins), and then in another statement, they're saying they are reinventing it, I have to scratch my head and wonder what they mean?
To be brutally honest, Black pissed off myself and a cadre of fan boys when he turned The Mandarin into a second-rate character in Iron Man 3. That was akin to making Lex Luthor a milk delivery boy. But I have to admit that the story was a great story, where we followed Tony Stark as he fought off the bad guys without his faulty armor, which mirrored how Stark always ended up fighting The Mandarin, since his magic seemed to nullify Starks armor. So kudos to that.
But I'm worried for the time being about this new Predator film that has yet to be given a release date.
We'll see.
In the mean time, check out this 30-minute fan-made production. It's been viewed over a million times and has nearly 19k 'up votes.'
It stars Adrian Bouchet, Amed Hashimi, Sabine Crossen, Ben loyd-Holmes, Jon Campling, Joe Egan and Philip Lane and was written and directed by James Bushe.
"It is set during the Crusades, where a group of Templar Knights is put to the test when they encounter the Predator. Their battle is the thing Myths and Legends are born from."
It was the winner of 'best fan film' at the Tri-Cities International Film Festival. (Psst: A league is 3.4 miles. Either they don't know that or they went for one hell of a hike!!! And of course, the film follows in the classic outlines of the Predator franchise: The hunting group brings along an expert that NOBODY listens to; We see victims take a stance to fight, then the scene change to only hear their screams of death. It's a decent fix if you need one.)
