Well, this will either be a daring and brilliant move that may set a precedent, or this will be a floundering and embarrassing decision made by Lionsgate.
Lionsgate has cancelled the theatrical release of the final (fourth) "Divergent" film of the series and has decided to make it into a TV movie. After the TV movie, they will probably be creating a spinoff TV series, based off a new set of characters.
It is unknown if Shailene Woodley, Theo James and others from the film series will appear. Though I am skeptical of that when the announcement includes the catch phrase, 'new set of characters.' But hey, who knows, though I've never really seen actors move from the big to little screen in mid-career too often.
Yes, you heard right. That's how badly the last film performed. And to be honest, I'm surprised they're pushing forward with the TV part of this plan.
Then again, this could also be a byproduct of trying to make a four-film series out of a three-book series.

The entire book series was a fun and engaging read. When the first film came out, it was a great film. But the second film of the series was so so boring because frankly, the film production lost something that the books had. The second film just felt like a total rehash of the first film.
It was so boring that I did not care about the next film. At all. I mean, face it, in my opinion, it was probably going to be more of the same. Right?
Now we'll see how this new plan pans out.
To be honest, to have a film series move to the TV platform and become a spinoff series could be one of those surprise moves that fans will eat up. If done right.
Any way, there you have it. The "Divergent" film series is moving to the TV side of things.
