Boy, has this film been on a roller coaster ride.
First there was the wait of if it was going to make enough money at the box office to warrant a sequel. Then after a very long wait, in what seemed like a begrudging time frame from the studio's end, it was green lit. Then it received a release date of mid-2017. Then that release date was pushed by by half a year. THEN it was shelved.
But now, with DeKnight on board directing, the film got its second green light.
But now we're learning that Charlie Hunnam ("Sons of Anarchy") will not be reprising his role of Raleigh in the upcoming sequel. He has initially cited scheduling conflicts. Even before Hunnam confirmed he would not be in it, del Toro was wishy washy about replying to inquiries about Hunnam's involvement.
Hunnam said they are forced to get on with making the movie and could not wait for his schedule to open up, due to the politics of film making. He called the process "Bass Ackwards."
The film has added John Boyega ("Star Wars: The Force Awakens") to the primary cast.

It will be a bit different without Hunnam, but with DeKnight picking up the directorial reigns, I think bigger and better things will be happening for the franchise. As it stands, DeKnight has helmed some pretty great shows, from the "Spartacus" series on Starz, to "Daredevil" on Netflix. He's got a great, dark and serious touch to his work. I'll be looking forward to seeing what he does, in conjunction with working with Del Toro.
