Zack Snyder Out, Joss Whedon In on JUSTICE LEAGUE

Due to tragic circumstances in the Snyder family, where his 20-year-old daughter committed suicide back in March. And all this time, Zack Snyder and his wife, Deborah, tried to muster through their sorrow via their work. But alas, this was not the healthiest course of action for the Snyders and after some time, decided it best if they step down from their directorial and production duties from the Justice League film to be with their family, who needs them most right now.

It is truly a valiant effort, nearly superhero-like if you will, as they tried to stay the course, commit to work and try to get through this, but to be honest, I can't fathom that having been the best for anyone involved in the Justice League movie or their family.

And regardless of the industry insiders thinking that this film was going to be career-hanging film for the Snyders, this was his best move. You can see his statement below, but albeit, our thoughts go out to the Snyder family.

With that said, it seems that he hired Joss Whedon to step in and help finish the job of getting Justice League out the door and into theaters.

But before my Whedon-verse mode got too excited, I realized that most of the production has been done and upon further review, I see that Whedon has already been working with Snyder for over a month, and is stepping in to to oversee extensive post-production work and shoot some substantial additional scenes. It was stressed by WB that the extra scenes will be set to the style and tempo that Snyder has already set with earlier work.

So we won't be getting that usual feel from Whedon's ability to put together fantastic ensemble stories, like he did with The Avengers and Age of Ultron. And don't forget, Joss Whedon has been writing a Batgirl script for WB, in which he will also direct.

But I have to wonder how nervous this makes Disney/Marvel (DM), considering, from what I can tell, they drove Whedon out with their mind-numbing, demanding oversight. And now he's moved over to the DC/WB camp, and totally by virtue of being driven there by DM.

If anything, maybe this will give us more Whedon films beyond Batgirl, if he works out OK with WB in this interim spot and after his Batgirl film. Because if it's one thing WB/DC needs, it's a film that will drive the box office into the billion dollar mark, and as we all know, Joss has done this twice now, with his Avengers films.

We'll see what comes of this, but again, our thoughts go out to the Snyders, and our hopes are now with Whedon!

Words by Zack Snyder:

“In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was the way through it. The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all-consuming. And in the last two months, I’ve come to the realization … I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”

Here’s the thing, I never planned to make this public. I thought it would just be in the family, a private matter, our private sorrow that we would deal with. When it became obvious that I need to take a break, I knew there would be narratives created on the internet. They’ll do what they do. The truth is … I’m past caring about that kind of thing now.

I want the movie to be amazing, and I’m a fan, but that all pales pretty quickly in comparison. I know the fans are going to be worried about the movie, but there are seven other kids that need me. In the end, it’s just a movie. It’s a great movie. But it’s just a movie.”
