The CW announced just two weeks after announcing the renewal, that they are cancelling Supernatural, with the upcoming fifteenth season being it's last season. But they did not expound on why. Which is weird.
Fifteen seasons is not bad for a show that only expected to last for five seasons with their 'monster of the week' format! And that 1967 Chevy Impala!!!
On the bright side, production has a chance to end the story of the Winchesters properly, having a full season of twenty episodes to do it with. At least that's they're saying right now. And hopefully in this last season, we'll get great episodes like
"The French Mistake" where Sam and Dean played actors named "Jared Padalecki" and "Jensen Ackles." OR
"Mystery Spot," where Dean died over and over while Sam is tormented by an Asia song. OR
The 200th episode filled with teenage girls putting on a musical version of Supernatural.
Let's not forget their swing at Scooby-Doo!
There are so many fun eps...

But what's interesting is that someone, somewhere, pulled the plug on the show, despite being the most-watched series on The CW. The reason I say that is that one of the most common statements we've heard come from The CW executives is that Supernatural had a permanent home at the CW, and that the show will go on for as long as the stars wanted to do it.
So the working theory in the community is that Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles may have been the ones that have decided they are done. I mean they've been playing Dean and Sam for fourteen years, with next year being their fifteenth and last.
To be honest, the show has been amazing fun for these fourteen years, but how many times can all of humanity be threatened with extinction level threats, right?
But I do have a few demands...
They better have more than one or two of their fun, one-off episodes. This is their chance to really shine and have fun with the franchise. They owe it to the fans, who have been one of the most faithful ever.
It's been amazing watching the show over these years, watching everyone develop and grow older. I just happened to have been binge watching season fourteen, and they've pulled in a great story thread with the development of Jack and what not. But once I saw the news about the show being cancelled, I hopped on Netflix and watched the first episode of the franchise. (They only have the first thirteen seasons for now.) It was amazing to see the format of the storytelling has not changed, even down to the scene change screens, with the show logo.
It's been fun watching Castiel (Misha Collins) and his overly pragmatic sense of telling the truth and not understanding human nuances down to even Jack's (Alexander Calvert) human development. (I just watched the episode where he started asking about love, from Dean of all people! LOL)
Right now I'm watching the episode where Dean and Jack started out, heading to Las Vegas (I won't divulge details in case more of you are waiting to binge watch this season), and it's pretty touching, having seen how Dean went from hating to Jack to his present state of surrogate father.
How many heroes have we known like Dean (Ackles) who love porn, cheeseburgers, bad B-movies and classic rock all at once? LOL.
And we have the show to thank for introducing us to or showcasing some fun and/or amazing talent like Misha Collins (Castiel), Mark Sheppard (Crowley), Jim Beaver (Bobby) with his bullocks and idgits, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Mark Pellegrino (Lucifer), Felicia Day (Charlie), Amanda Tapping (from Stargate) as an angel, Ruth Connell (Rowena) to even X-File's Mitch Pileggi. Heck, what I found surprising was that Samantha Smith, the original actress who played their mother in the pilot episode, reprising her role more than 10 years later. How often do you see that?
On the bright side, at least the show isn't ending because the show got long in the tooth, officially.
One thing is for sure... it will be really weird to see either of these guys doing something else!
A note from Ackles, Padalecki and Collins:

“We just told the crew that though we’re very, very excited about moving into our 15th season, it will be our last,” says Ackles. “We wanted you to hear from us. We’ve cried some tears and we’ll cry some more,” says Padalecki, “we’ll work all the emotion into next season.” Collins added, “This family is not going anywhere even though this show ill come to an end.}

When we start this, we find out that Supernatural Season 15 was the last one. We learned that the show was coming to an end. Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins all told us about it. During filming, they would go back and forth between Texas and British Columbia every weekend. This meant that they would be able to spend more time with their families.
