SPENSER CONFIDENTIAL (2020), A Rapid Fire Review

Spenser Confidential stars Mark Wahlberg, Winston Duke, Alan Arkin in a film directed by action guy Peter Berg (Ballers, The Leftovers, Friday Night Ligths, Battleship ).

"Spenser (Mark Wahlberg) - an ex-cop better known for making trouble than solving it - just got out of prison and is leaving Boston for good. But first he gets roped into helping his old boxing coach and mentor, Henry (Alan Arkin), with a promising amateur. That's Hawk (Winston Duke), a brash, no-nonsense MMA fighter convinced he'll be a tougher opponent than Spenser ever was. When two of Spenser's former colleagues turn up murdered, he recruits Hawk and his foul-mouthed ex-girlfriend, Cissy (Iliza Shlesinger), to help him investigate and bring the culprits to justice. From director Peter Berg, SPENSER CONFIDENTIAL is an action-comedy co-starring Bokeem Woodbine, Marc Maron and Austin Post. Inspired by Robert B. Parker's Wonderland, a best-selling novel by Ace Atkins."

The film is a classic good guy been wronged film, as we learn why Spenser gets tossed in prison and when he gets out, can't be left to his own devices as things and events connected to his past suck him back into the fray of doing what's right.

Along the way he ticks people off and tends to start fights he can't quite finish... but thank god for his partners and friends.

All in all, this was a classic-feel kind of fun film that kept me entertained throughout, and Wahlberg delivers a unique version of his usual tough guy mode that is annoyingly fun to watch. That, and so far, I haven't watched a Peter Berg film that I haven't liked yet.

Could there be more Spenser films? Maybe. The movie is based on a book character, so you never know.

IMDb users gave the film a 6.2/10! I don't disagree with that number!

Have Netflix? Got time?  (I think you do these days) Check it out. I don't think you'll be sorry.
