Cold Pursuit stars Liam Neeson and a slew of other recognizable faces throughout the film.
"A grieving snowplow driver seeks out revenge against the drug dealers who killed his son."
So let's start from the beginning a bit... a few kids try to scalp from a drug dealer and one of them ends up getting killed. We learn that the dead kid is the son of Nels Coxman (Neeson), who decides, after a few events of grieving, that he will hunt down and kill the people responsible for his son's death. (We all need goals, right?)
So yes, this becomes one of Neesom's revenge films, but this one is an oddly obscure and disjointed kind of action film that is based on the Norwegian movie "In Order of Disappearance," and directed by the same man, Hans Petter Moland.
While watching the movie you can't decide if the movie is story of revenge or a spoof of the revenge movie genre due to moments of hilarious (sort of) moments and scenes.
Case in point:
No one seems to care if their actions are caught on surveillance camera.
Coxman's acts cause a blood feud between gangs before they even realize it's one man doing all the hurt.
The veteran cop of the town is more focused on letting things be as they are while his newbie cop partner is all about chasing after the kids who smoke pot out in the open.
When a character dies, they get a black screen moment showcasing their name. And in the huge gun fight scene, the black screen gets A LOT of names on it.
The moments of dry brevity are curious and momentarily pace-changing and to be honest, I kept watching to see where this film thinks it was going.
Sometimes the film is so mediocre that the brevity moments get lost in the doldrums.
But we get to see Neeson doing things he usually does on movies... kill bad guys, one after another, as he works his way up the drug dealer chain of lackeys.
Cold Pursuit is not a bad film if you have nothing better to do and want to surf the web, with this in the background.
